BREAKING: FG Shuts Over 13 Million Social Media Accounts, Deletes 59 Million Offensive Posts

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the closure of over 13 million social media accounts and the deletion of 59 million offensive posts. This action was taken in response to violations of the Code Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms as outlined in the 2024 Code Practice Compliance Report.

The Nigerian Communications Commission, National Information Technology Development Agency, and National Broadcasting Commission jointly issued the report, which revealed the shutdown of accounts on major platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter). The government also received complaints about user content that was initially removed but later reinstated upon successful appeal.

NITDA spokesperson Hadiza Umar praised tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and TikTok for adhering to guidelines to promote a safer digital environment. The government has pledged to continue collaborating with industry players to enhance user safety and strengthen trust in Nigeria's digital ecosystem.
