Former Accountant-General Nwabuoku Sentenced to 72 Years

Chukwunyer Anamekw Nwabuoku, the former Accountant-General of the Federation, has been sentenced to 72 years in prison following his conviction for fraud involving N868.46 million. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced the sentencing after Nwabuoku was found guilty of money laundering by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The prosecution presented several witnesses and documentary evidence during the trial, which revealed that Nwabuoku conspired with various companies to convert funds believed to be proceeds of unlawful activities. The offenses occurred during his tenure as Director of Finance and Accounts at the Ministry of Defence from 2019 to 2021.

Nwabuoku was appointed as the acting Accountant-General in May 2022 but was suspended shortly thereafter due to allegations of a separate N800 million fraud case. He was arraigned by the EFCC on January 15, 2025, and the court denied him bail pending the conclusion of the trial.
