Nwabuoku Sentenced: Calls for Special Anti-Corruption Courts

Chukwunyer Nwabuoku, the former Accountant General of the Federation, was sentenced to eight years in prison by Justice James Omotosho at the Federal High Court in Abuja for money laundering involving N868 million. Nwabuoku was convicted on nine counts of money laundering, with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) successfully proving the charges beyond a reasonable doubt.

The court noted that Nwabuoku's actions diverted funds meant for the security of the defense sector. During the investigation, he voluntarily refunded N200 million, which was not contested during the trial.

The EFCC called nine witnesses, including bank staff and civil servants, to support the prosecution. This conviction has reignited discussions about the need for special anti-corruption courts in Nigeria to handle such cases more effectively, as legal experts express concerns over delays in the judicial process that hinder anti-corruption efforts.
