INEC Announces 2027 Election Dates and Timetable

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced the dates for the 2027 general elections during a press conference in Abuja on Friday. INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan clarified that the presidential election will take place on February 20, 2027, while the governorship and state house assembly elections are scheduled for March 6, 2027.

This announcement is seen as a significant milestone in Nigeria's democratic process. Amupitan dismissed previous reports of unofficial election dates and highlighted the need for adequate time to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.

He referenced the 1999 Constitution and the amended Electoral Act of 2022, noting that the tenures of the president, vice president, governors, and deputy governors, except in specific states, will expire on May 28, 2027. Furthermore, he stated that INEC is mandated to publish election notices no less than 360 days before the election date, ensuring a nationwide electoral process.
