INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu Resigns After 10 Years

Professor Mahmood Yakubu has resigned as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after a decade in office. Yakubu announced his resignation during a quarterly meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners in Abuja, citing the need for a smooth leadership transition as per the 1999 Constitution.

Following his resignation, a senior National Commissioner has been unanimously selected to serve as the Acting Chairman until a new substantive head is appointed by the President. Yakubu highlighted the significant transformations and innovations introduced during his tenure, including digital administrative reforms and a transparent electoral system.

His resignation comes as INEC prepares for a busy election calendar in Nigeria.
