INEC Revises 2027 Elections Timetable for Compliance

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), led by Chairman Prof. Joash O. Amupitan, confirmed on Wednesday that it will revise the timetable for the 2027 general elections to comply with the newly enacted Electoral Act 2026.

This announcement was made during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners in Abuja. The commission will issue a notice for the elections on February 13, 2026, following the passage of the new law.

Amupitan highlighted the necessity of this revision to ensure compliance and operational coherence. Preparatory steps include a review of the commission's regulatory guidelines and a voter registration exercise scheduled from January 5 to April 17, 2026.

This is part of a year-long process concluding on August 30, 2026. Amupitan also addressed the need for improved voter education and logistics, emphasizing that the commission will not tolerate lapses that could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
