Jonathan's Team Moves to Dismiss 2027 Election Suit

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, represented by attorney Lateef Fagbemi, is seeking to have a suit dismissed that challenges his eligibility to run in the 2027 presidential election. The case is being heard by Justice Peter Lifu at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The plaintiff, represented by lawyer Johnmari Jideobi, claims Jonathan has exhausted his constitutional limits under Section 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution, citing his previous terms in office. Jonathan's counsel, Chris Uche, argues that similar suits have previously been dismissed and that the plaintiff lacks legal standing to bring the action.

Uche also requested the court to award N50 million in damages against the plaintiff. The Federal Ministry of Justice, represented by Dr. Maimuna Lamin Shiru, supports the dismissal of the case.

The court is set to deliver a ruling on May 26 regarding the application filed by the plaintiff.
