Kano Assembly Moves to Impeach Deputy Governor Abdussalam

The Kano State Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam, citing allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust. The impeachment notice, presented on the assembly floor, complies with Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

The allegations stem from Abdussalam's tenure as the head of the commission overseeing local governments from June 2023 to January 2024, where he reportedly received kickbacks totaling N462 million over seven months. Further accusations include an additional N726 million received for special assignments.

The impeachment notice claims Abdussalam facilitated payments to pharmaceutical companies amounting to N440 million, violating state procurement laws. The notice has been endorsed by 38 lawmakers, and the assembly's speaker has acknowledged receipt, expecting to communicate the allegations to the Chief Judge of the state to establish an investigative panel.

Abdussalam has yet to publicly respond to these allegations.
