Kano Assembly Initiates Impeachment of Deputy Governor

On Thursday, the Kano State House of Assembly commenced impeachment proceedings against Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam, citing allegations of misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust. The impeachment notice was presented by Majority Leader Lawan Dala and read by Speaker Ismail Falgor during a plenary session.

The action is grounded in Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution, which allows state legislatures to initiate impeachment proceedings against a deputy governor accused of gross misconduct. A total of 38 lawmakers signed the impeachment notice.

This political maneuver comes amid rising tensions in Kano State, particularly following Governor Abba Yusuf's defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the All Progressives Congress last year. Abdulsalam chose not to follow the governor in this political shift, opting to remain with the NNPP, which has reportedly deepened the rift within the state government and raised speculation about the political future of the current administration.
