Kwara State Teachers Protest Salary Disparity and Exclusion from Allowance

Public school teachers in Kwara State, Nigeria, staged a protest on Friday over salary disparities and exclusion from a recently approved 30% peculiar salary allowance granted to other categories of state workers. The teachers accused the state government and union leadership, specifically the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), of neglect and betrayal.

The protesters highlighted the worsening economic hardship and unfair treatment they face, demanding the implementation of the 30% peculiar allowance for teachers. The teachers carried placards expressing their economic struggles, including messages about living on loans to sustain their lives due to inadequate wage payments.

The protest identified Olayinka as a demonstrator against the state government and NUT leadership's inaction, especially regarding the exclusion of teachers from the 30% allowance. The NUT Kwara State leadership distanced itself from the protest, warning against unauthorized actions.

However, the union praised the state government for approving specific teacher-related allowances. The teachers emphasized that without the inclusion of the 30% allowance, they would earn less than civil servants in the state.
