Makinde Calls UN to Investigate Oyo Pupils' Abduction

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has called on the United Nations to conduct an independent investigation into the abduction of 39 pupils and six teachers from Oriire Local Government Area. This request was made during a broadcast on Monday, following the rescue of the victims by the Nigerian military.

The incident occurred on May 15 when heavily armed gunmen attacked three schools, resulting in the kidnapping of the pupils and teachers, and the death of one teacher. The victims spent 56 days in captivity before being rescued.

Governor Makinde emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating that the circumstances warrant independent scrutiny. He noted that the rescued individuals are currently receiving medical treatment and that the state government will monitor their recovery closely.

The governor's call for an investigation coincides with his declaration to contest the 2027 presidential election and follows a meeting with Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed.
