Makinde Calls for UN Probe into Oriire Kidnapping Incident

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State announced the need for an international investigation into the mass abduction of 44 pupils and teachers from schools in Oriire Local Government Area, which took place on May 15, 2026. This call was made during the inauguration of an eight-member Judicial Commission of Inquiry in Ibadan.

The governor emphasized that the investigation aims to uncover the full truth behind the incident and ensure accountability, rather than criticize Nigerian security agencies' efforts during the rescue operation. The victims were released on July 10, 2026, after spending 56 days in captivity.

Makinde stated that understanding the circumstances of the kidnapping is crucial for strengthening security around schools and vulnerable communities. The commission is tasked with examining the events leading to the attack, identifying institutional weaknesses, and proposing measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

He reiterated that while the rescue brought relief, establishing the truth is essential for closure.
