NFF Appeals FIFA Ruling on DR Congo Player Eligibility

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has commenced the process of appealing FIFA's decision that rejected its protest concerning the eligibility of certain players from the Democratic Republic of Congo. This ruling pertains to the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff match against Nigeria, which is set to take place on November 16, 2025, at the Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.

The NFF's General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome of FIFA's Disciplinary Committee's ruling.

The NFF is contesting the decision based on allegations of irregularities related to the issuance of passports that allowed several players from the Democratic Republic of Congo to participate in the playoff match, which ended in a 1-1 draw after regular and extra time, with DR Congo winning 4-3 in a sudden death penalty shootout. FIFA's initial ruling dismissed the NFF's protest, prompting the federation to pursue a review and appeal process in hopes of overturning the decision and revisiting the outcome of the tie.
