Nigeria Awaits FIFA Ruling on DRC's Ineligible Players

Nigeria's football team, the Super Eagles, is facing uncertainty following their defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the African playoff final for the 2026 World Cup qualification. They lost in a penalty shootout and subsequently lodged a formal complaint with FIFA, alleging that the DRC fielded several ineligible dual-nation players, including Axel Tuanzebe and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

With only three weeks remaining until the international match window, FIFA has yet to deliver a ruling on the matter, leaving the Nigeria Football Federation in a state of uncertainty regarding their qualification bid. Mamad Gay, an African football expert, highlighted a similar situation where South Africa's Bafana Bafana had points deducted for fielding an ineligible player.

He urged patience as Nigeria's appeal runs its course, stressing that the case may end up in the Court of Arbitration for Sport if FIFA's ruling is unfavorable. Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation confirmed a friendly match against Iran and Jordan next month.
