Nigeria's 2026 World Cup Dreams End as FIFA Confirms DR Congo

Nigeria's aspirations for the 2026 World Cup have been dashed following FIFA's announcement that DR Congo will represent Africa in the play-offs. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had previously challenged the outcome of a match where Nigeria drew 1-1 with DR Congo, alleging that DR Congo fielded an ineligible player.

Despite filing a protest, FIFA's latest communication did not indicate any changes to the qualification teams, confirming that Nigeria's appeal was unsuccessful. The play-off tournament, set to begin on March 26, 2025, will feature six teams competing for the final two spots in the World Cup, which will be hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

The fixtures include New Caledonia facing Jamaica and Bolivia taking on Surinam, with DR Congo playing the winner of the New Caledonia versus Jamaica match on March 31. Nigeria will not participate in the 2026 tournament.
