Nigeria's World Cup Dreams End as FIFA Names DR Congo

Nigeria's aspirations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have suffered a significant setback as FIFA officially named the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) among the six teams qualifying for the intercontinental playoff tournament. This announcement was made in a statement sent to journalists, confirming that the tournament will run from March 26 to March 31, 2026.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had previously lodged a protest against DR Congo's eligibility, alleging that six of their players violated domestic laws prohibiting dual citizenship. However, FIFA dismissed these claims, stating that it is not their responsibility to enforce DR Congo's domestic regulations.

Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, the NFF's General Secretary, confirmed that the federation submitted documentation to FIFA arguing that the players' eligibility was in question.

Despite hopes for a legal appeal, FIFA's latest communication indicates a clear path for DR Congo, marking Nigeria's absence from the World Cup for the second consecutive tournament, following their failure to qualify for the 2018 and 2022 editions.
