BREAKING: Nnamdi Kanu Petitions US, AU, Foreign Missions Over ‘Unlawful Detention’ in Nigeria

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has petitioned several international organizations, including the US, AU, and foreign missions, over his alleged unlawful detention in Nigeria. In a petition dated August 22, 2025, Kanu called for urgent intervention to secure his release, stating that he has been held in solitary confinement since June 2021.

He criticized the Nigerian Supreme Court for overturning his acquittal by the Court of Appeal on October 13, 2022, and declared the subsequent ruling unconstitutional. Kanu accused the Nigerian judiciary of political bias and reckless lawlessness, alleging violations of his fundamental rights and international law.

He warned that his continued detention could endanger his life and urged the international community to intervene. Kanu's petition demands the enforcement of the Court of Appeal's October 13, 2022 decision, his immediate release, and accountability for Nigeria's judicial lawlessness.
