Tinubu Appoints Dr. Taiwo Oyedele as Finance Minister

On Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu appointed Dr. Taiwo Oyedele as the Minister of State for Finance, succeeding Dr.

Dori Anit Uzoka, who has been redeployed to the Ministry of Budget and National Planning. Oyedele's nomination was sent to the Senate for confirmation by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Aged 50, Oyedele is an economist and public policy expert, having served as the chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform since its inauguration in August 2023. He is expected to lead significant tax reforms in Nigeria, including the introduction of four executive bills aimed at consolidating 60 taxes into fewer than 10 statutes.

Key reforms include a zero income tax for Nigerians earning less than N800,000 annually, effective from January 1, 2026, and exemptions for small businesses with turnovers below N50 million. Oyedele has extensive experience, having spent 22 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers and currently serving as a professor at Babcock University.

The Senate is expected to screen and confirm his nomination within the week.
