Prof. Joash Amupitan to Assume Office as New INEC Chairman

Prof. Joash Amupitan is scheduled to officially assume office as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday, October 23, 2025.

He replaces Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who led the commission from 2015 to 2025.

Amupitan's appointment comes after President Bola Tinubu nominated him in September 2025, and the Senate confirmed his appointment. With a background in law and governance, Amupitan is expected to lead electoral reforms and strengthen INEC ahead of upcoming elections in Nigeria.
