Supreme Court Nullifies PDP Ibadan Convention Executives

On November 15-16, 2025, the Supreme Court of Nigeria delivered a judgment that voided the Ibadan Convention of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and nullified the factional executives led by Tanimu Turaki. Justice Stephen Jona Adah, who presided over the case, ruled that the convention was conducted in defiance of a valid court order, which constituted a serious violation of the rule of law.

The court emphasized that such disobedience to judicial orders is unacceptable in a democratic system. The legal battle began when former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido sought to stop the convention, alleging that it violated the party's constitution and failed to follow due process.

Despite a restraining order from the Federal High Court, the PDP proceeded with the convention, leading to further litigation. The Supreme Court's ruling is expected to have significant implications for the PDP's internal leadership structure as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.
