Tinubu Declares National Emergency on Poverty and Insecurity

On a significant occasion at Eagle Square in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu declared a national emergency on poverty and insecurity, highlighting the direct threats these issues pose to Nigeria's stability and economic productivity. He emphasized the federal government's commitment to addressing these challenges, which stifle industrial growth and disrupt daily life for citizens.

Tinubu noted that the government aims to combat rising crime and rural instability through various initiatives, including a cash transfer system targeting 7.5 million people living in extreme poverty. He also announced plans for large-scale infrastructure projects, such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Akk Gas Pipeline, which are expected to create 600,000 jobs.

Furthermore, Tinubu confirmed the enforcement of a new national minimum wage and the reintroduction of gratuity payments for public servants starting January 2026. He urged labor leaders to maintain peaceful relations with the government and emphasized that decent work is a cornerstone of his administration's agenda.
