FCTA Promotes Exclusive Breastfeeding as Newborn Vaccine

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration has declared exclusive breastfeeding as every newborn's first immunization and a vital source of nutrition during the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week celebration at the Primary Health Care Centre in Owners Occupiers Quarters, Kubwa, Abuja. Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, urged nursing mothers to exclusively breastfeed for the first six months, highlighting that breast milk provides essential nutrients and strengthens immunity against preventable diseases.

She called for support from fathers, employers, and community leaders to create breastfeeding-friendly environments. Mrs. Chinyere Ekwueme, FCT Nutrition Officer, advised mothers to initiate breastfeeding immediately after birth and maintain exclusive breastfeeding.

Dr. Dan Gadzama, Acting Executive Secretary of the FCT Primary Health Care Board, emphasized that breastfeeding is a cost-effective intervention for child survival, aligning with this year’s theme, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthening What Works.”.
