FCTA Boosts Campaign for Exclusive Breastfeeding in Abuja
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has enhanced its campaign against infectious diseases and maternal and child health by advocating for exclusive breastfeeding. At the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week and Town Hall Meeting on Infectious Disease Prevention in Abuja, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, the mandate secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, emphasized breastfeeding as a vital, cost-effective intervention for mothers and children.
The event, attended by the World Health Organization and various stakeholders, aimed to reinforce strategies that improve health outcomes. Fasawe noted that exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months offers essential nutrients and protection against illnesses, while also benefiting mothers by reducing cancer risks and healthcare costs.
Despite these advantages, she expressed concern over the low exclusive breastfeeding rate of 29.1% in the FCT, citing the 2023 National Demographic and Health Survey. The FCTA plans to expand Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiatives and encourage breastfeeding-friendly workplaces.
Dr. Daniel Gadzama, Executive Secretary of the FCT Primary Health Care Board, urged community leaders to promote exclusive breastfeeding.
