Building Collapse in Enugu Claims One Life, Rescue Ongoing

On Sunday, September 13, 2026, an uncompleted four-storey building collapsed in the Independence Layout area of Enugu, resulting in the death of one individual. The incident occurred around 6 a.m., as reported by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) through an official statement signed by its Press Unit spokesperson, Manzo Ezekiel.

Upon learning of the collapse, NEMA's Director-General, Mrs Zubaida Umar, directed the agency's Operations Office to dispatch an Emergency Rescue Team to the site. When the rescue team arrived, they were informed that several individuals were trapped under the debris, prompting immediate search and rescue operations.

An excavator was brought in to assist with the removal of rubble. By 11:20 a.m., the joint rescue team had recovered the lifeless body of one male victim.

NEMA confirmed that rescue efforts were ongoing, with teams continuing to search for any additional victims who may still be trapped beneath the rubble. The operation involves collaboration with several organizations, including the Enugu State Emergency Management Agency and the Enugu State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.
