Anambra Governorship Election Marred by BVAS Glitches and Vote-Buying Allegations

The Anambra Governorship Election was marred by glitches in the Biometric Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and vote-buying allegations. Several polling units in Onitsha and Idemili local government areas of Anambra State experienced delays in voter accreditation due to BVAS malfunctions.

Instances of BVAS failing to read voter cards, hindering elderly voter accreditation, and allegations of vote-buying by party agents were reported. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ad-hoc staff expressed frustration over the technical challenges.

Specific incidents included BVAS malfunctions in Nnewi North, Nnobi, and Uruagu, leading to delays in voter accreditation. Allegations of vote-buying were reported in various polling units, with party agents seen recording voter names and engaging in cash exchanges for votes.

Despite these disruptions, INEC Chairperson Prof. Joash Amupitan assured the public of the commission's readiness to ensure a peaceful, credible, and transparent election, promising to address infractions promptly.
