CAF Awards Morocco 2025 AFCON Title Amid Controversy

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) awarded Morocco the title of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following a controversial final against Senegal on January 18, where Senegal won 1-0. The match was marred by chaos, including a penalty awarded to Morocco during stoppage time and protests led by Senegal's coach Pape Thiaw.

Following the match, CAF's disciplinary board imposed a fine exceeding one million dollars on Senegal and suspended individuals for misconduct. However, CAF later invoked Articles 82 and 84 of the AFCON regulations to forfeit the match in favor of Morocco, marking a historic decision as Morocco was awarded the title without winning on the pitch.

Senegalese Football Federation's Secretary General criticized the ruling, stating it lacked legal basis. Senegal plans to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, which will keep the matter in public view for an extended period, raising concerns about the governance of African football.
