CAF Confirms 2027 AFCON Expansion to 28 Teams

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially dismissed reports suggesting a postponement of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), confirming that the tournament will proceed as scheduled. This decision was ratified during a meeting of CAF's executive committee held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The tournament will be jointly hosted by Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya, marking the first time AFCON will be held across three East African nations. CAF reiterated its commitment to ensuring that preparations remain on track, including infrastructure development and logistical arrangements.

Additionally, CAF announced plans to expand the tournament to 28 participating countries, a move aimed at increasing competition and providing more nations the opportunity to shine on the continental stage. Patrice Motsepe, the CAF president, emphasized that the four-year cycle allows national teams adequate time to prepare and improve their squads.

The expansion proposal has been welcomed, although concerns regarding scheduling and travel logistics have been raised.
