CAF Snubs Nigerian Referees for 19th Year Due to VAR Training Inadequacies

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has once again overlooked Nigerian referees for the 19th consecutive year in officiating African football tournaments. This exclusion is attributed to the Nigerian referees' inadequate VAR training and limited experience, which are now mandatory criteria for officiating in CAF and FIFA tournaments.

Despite Nigeria's strong football heritage, the country's referees continue to lag behind in VAR integration compared to other African nations like Côte d'Ivoire. The West African Football Union (WAFU) has been criticized for prioritizing referee education and VAR integration in francophone countries over anglophone countries like Nigeria.

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and the wider football community are urged to intervene and enhance referee development programs to ensure Nigerian referees can return to officiating major continental and global competitions. Ibrahim Gusau, the President of the NFF, has emphasized efforts to improve Nigerian referees' capabilities for future tournaments.
