Calabar Carnival 2026 Theme Unveiled by Governor Otu

On Sunday night, Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River unveiled the theme for the Calabar Carnival 2026, titled "Rethink Collective Destiny," during an event marking the carnival's 21st anniversary. The theme aims to reflect a collective resolve to reimagine the future of the carnival as a driver of economic growth and cultural preservation.

Otu emphasized the importance of public participation, stating that the carnival's success depends on collective commitment. Innovations introduced include online voting to engage the community and allow public participation in the carnival experience.

Gabe Onah, chairman of the Calabar Carnival Commission, noted that the carnival has evolved significantly over the past 15 years, showcasing cultural heritage and providing business opportunities for artisans and performers. The event is expected to attract international visitors, with calls from tourism stakeholders like Ikechi Uko urging the development of tour packages around the carnival to double visitor arrivals by 2026.

Aliyu Badaki, president of the Federal Tourism Association of Nigeria, pledged support for the carnival's sustainability and its economic benefits for the community.
