Group Demands Federal Action Against NAFDAC Alcohol Ban

The Rebirth Movement Nigeria has called for immediate federal intervention regarding the enforcement of a ban on 200ml sachet alcohol products by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), led by Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye. The group, represented by Comrade Johnson Kolawole Michael, argues that the enforcement of this ban contravenes existing national alcohol policy approved by the Federal Ministry of Health and disregards a presidential directive.

They warn that continuing the ban could lead to widespread civil unrest and negatively impact Nigeria's fragile economy, resulting in massive job losses across the alcohol product value chain. The group emphasizes that sachet alcohol products cater to low-income adults and should not be removed without empirical justification.

They also caution that banning regulated products may lead to the rise of illicit and substandard alternatives, posing greater public health risks. The group has called for urgent suspension of the ban to prevent escalating tensions and has urged NAFDAC's Director General to act in the public interest.
