Cambodian Court Upholds 14-Year Sentence for Journalists

On Thursday, a Cambodian court upheld a 14-year prison sentence for journalists Pheap Phara and Phorn Sopheap, who were convicted of treason for posting a photo on Facebook that allegedly showed a Cambodian soldier near the Ta Krabei Temple, located in a disputed border area with Thailand. The journalists were arrested in late July after the image was shared, which reportedly depicted landmines in the background.

The case, according to the local rights group Licadho, reflects ongoing tensions between Cambodia and Thailand, which have seen several clashes resulting in casualties and displacements. The appeal court in Battambang province confirmed the conviction, stating that the journalists had supplied information prejudicial to national defense.

Tep Asnarith, a spokesman for the Cambodian Ministry, indicated that the case serves as a warning for journalists to consider the implications of their publications on national security. Cambodia ranks 161st out of 180 countries in the World Press Freedom Index, highlighting the challenges faced by the media in the country.
