Cameroon Eliminates Nigeria from WAFCON Quarter-Finals

In the quarter-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday, defending champions Nigeria were eliminated by Cameroon, who won 1-0. The decisive goal came in the 19th minute from 20-year-old Myriam Maéva Nyadjou, whose long-range shot left Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie unable to respond.

Nigeria attempted to equalize quickly, with Rasheedat Ajibade delivering a dangerous cross, but Gift Monday could not connect. The Super Falcons created further chances, notably through Rinsola Babajide and Jennifer Echegini, but Cameroon maintained their lead into halftime.

In the second half, Nigeria increased their urgency, but Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina made crucial saves, including a standout stop against Uchenna Kanu's header. Cameroon nearly extended their lead with a free-kick from Achta Njoya.

Nigeria's last efforts included a near miss from substitute Esther Okoronkwo. Cameroon’s victory not only eliminated Nigeria but also secured their qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
