Cameroon Shocks Nigeria 1-0 in WAFCON Quarter-Final

In a significant upset, Cameroon defeated Nigeria 1-0 in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations held in Casablanca on Sunday. Myriam Maéva Nyadjou Wamen scored the decisive goal in the 19th minute at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium.

Despite Nigeria's dominance in the latter stages of the first half and their continued efforts to equalize after halftime, they were unable to penetrate Cameroon’s defense. The Cameroonian goalkeeper made a crucial save from close range in the second half, preserving the lead.

This defeat marked the end of Nigeria's title defense and eliminated them from contention for a place in the semi-finals, which also means they will not secure the automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, a spot reserved for the four WAFCON semi-finalists. Nigeria had entered the quarter-finals as defending champions and had previously dominated their encounters with Cameroon in the tournament.
