CAN Rejects Niger Hisbah Law Over Religious Divisions

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has formally rejected the Hisbah law proposed in Niger State, expressing concerns that it would foster divisions among citizens of varying faiths. Rev.

Bulu Dauwa Yohanna, the state chairman of CAN, issued a statement cautioning that the bill, sponsored by Hon. Moham Abubakar, a member of the House of Representatives for Chanchaga constituency, has already sparked controversy.

He noted that the executive arm of the government has not yet assented to the bill. Yohanna emphasized that Niger State is not a single-religion state and urged the government to transcend religious divides, focusing instead on uniting citizens.

He called upon members of the state House of Assembly to prioritize policies that would benefit the populace. The chairman also highlighted that security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and various vigilante groups, have already been established to address social vices.
