Ogun CAN Appeals to Governor Abiodun Against Abortion Bill

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ogun State Chapter, has formally appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun not to assent to the Safe Termination of Pregnancy Bill recently passed by the Ogun State House of Assembly. The appeal was made in a press statement signed by The Right Reverend Emmanuel Oludaisi Adekunle, the State Chairman of CAN and Bishop of Egba Diocese of the Anglican Communion.

Adekunle argued that the bill undermines the sanctity of life and violates the right to life under Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution, as well as freedom of conscience under Section 38. The bill, titled “H.B.

No. 036/OG/2026 – Ogun State Safe Termination of Pregnancy Law, 2026,” aims to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality and promote reproductive health rights. However, CAN expressed concerns that it could force Christian workers and faith-based hospitals to act against their religious convictions.

Adekunle emphasized the need for support and counseling for victims of rape and poverty rather than condemnation, and he reiterated CAN's willingness to collaborate with the government on maternal health issues.
