Ogun Assembly Enacts Safe Termination of Pregnancy Law

On September 25, 2026, the Ogun State House of Assembly passed the "H.B. No. 036/OG/2026 – Ogun State Safe Termination of Pregnancy Law, 2026," during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Oludaisi Elemide at the Assembly Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The legislation aims to establish conditions for safe pregnancy termination in accordance with legally recognized indications to curb maternal deaths. The bill's passage followed the presentation of the House Committee on Health's report by Chairman Wahab Haruna, who moved for its adoption, seconded by Chief Whip Hon. Omobola Bakare.

The lawmakers supported the motion through a voice vote. The bill was considered and adopted clause-by-clause, with the third reading motion moved by Babatunde Tella and seconded by Lukman Adeleye, receiving unanimous support.

Clerk/Head of Legislative Service Mr. Sakiru Adabakin read the bill for the third time. Following its passage, Speaker Elemide directed that a clean copy be sent to Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun for assent.
