Prof. Oloyede Calls for Review of Nigeria's Abortion Laws

Prof. Olufemi Oloyede, a Professor of Fetal Medicine at Olabisi Onabanjo University in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, called for a review of Nigeria’s abortion laws during the university’s 130th inaugural lecture on Tuesday. He argued that current laws prioritize the interests of mothers while neglecting the rights of unborn children.

Oloyede stated that fetuses diagnosed with severe abnormalities should be considered for termination under a reformed law, emphasizing that malformed fetuses and those likely to suffer lifelong challenges should be included. He cited Down syndrome as a condition warranting such considerations.

Oloyede acknowledged the controversy surrounding this proposal, particularly regarding sickle cell disease, where societal capabilities to care for affected children are limited. He highlighted the severe pain and challenges faced by children with sickle cell disease, advocating for a societal responsibility to prevent suffering.

Oloyede's position reflects a need for a balanced approach to fetal rights and maternal interests in Nigeria's abortion legislation.
