Canada Allows Short-Term Studies for Work Permit Holders

On September 9, 2026, Canada announced a new immigration measure via the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that permits certain work permit holders, including Nigerians, to undertake short-term studies without needing to apply for a separate study permit. Eligible workers can study for up to six months or until their work permit expires, whichever comes first.

This initiative aims to fill labor gaps in critical sectors such as health care and home construction. The IRCC clarified that eligible workers will be directly notified about this exemption, eliminating the need for them to take any action to apply.

The announcement reflects a broader effort by Canadian authorities to facilitate skill upgrades for temporary workers already in the country. Additionally, concerns were raised by Nigeria's Ministry of Interior regarding delays in processing visa applications for Nigerian citizens, which have affected students' ability to travel for studies.
