Canada Visa Processing Delays Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Canada is facing slow visa processing just months before it hosts 13 matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled for June. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada agency is struggling to manage a surge in visa applications amid a workforce reduction of approximately 20%.

This slowdown has raised concerns about potential travel disruptions for millions of visitors expected to attend the tournament. Stakeholders warn that extended delays in the visitor visa process could disrupt plans for tourists, temporary workers, media crews, and business travelers intending to participate in the international event.

In response, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) stated it is collaborating with government partners and host cities to handle the anticipated influx of visitors and address the expected large volume of travel. The CBSA is working closely with various Canadian government partners, including the Department of Canadian Heritage, Sport Canada, and Global Affairs Canada, to ensure safety and security during the event.
