Canada Imposes Tariffs Up to 50% on U.S. Goods

On August 26, 2023, Canada retaliated against the United States by imposing tariffs ranging from 15% to 50% on a wide array of American goods, escalating the ongoing trade war between the two nations. The Canadian government stated that these new duties would take effect on September 8, following the introduction of 50% U.S. tariffs on Canadian products.

The tariffs will impact major categories such as steel, aluminum, dairy products, electrical equipment, and consumer goods. Canadian Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne described the situation as an unprecedented challenge, asserting that Canada is prepared to defend its economic interests.

A CA$7.5 billion (approximately $5.4 billion) support package was also announced for businesses and workers affected by the tariffs. Industry Minister Melanie Joly emphasized the need for Canadians to support domestic businesses and warned of a strong response if the U.S. proceeds with plans to increase tariffs on Canadian automobiles.

The retaliatory measures cover about 7.3% of Canada’s imports from the U.S., responding to tariffs that have already impacted $20 billion worth of Canadian goods.
