Canada Implements New Border Rules and Surtaxes in 2026

The Government of Canada has announced significant updates to its border crossing guidance, effective September 8, 2026. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) will impose surtaxes, also known as counter tariffs, on specific goods imported from the United States, responding to tariffs placed on Canadian exports by the US.

The CBSA has provided separate guidance for importers regarding the application of these surtaxes and has advised travellers bringing goods from the US for personal use to check applicable Canadian tariffs. Furthermore, due to an Ebola outbreak reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan, Canadian authorities have introduced temporary border measures to mitigate the risk of the virus entering Canada, although they state the risk remains low.

Travellers are reminded to utilize resources such as the ArriveCAN app's Advance Declaration feature and to ensure they have valid travel documents for all family members crossing into Canada.
