Canada Introduces 8-Step Work Permit Application Process

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has published an eight-step guide for foreign nationals wishing to apply for a work permit upon arrival at a Canadian port of entry. While it is generally advised to secure a work permit before traveling, certain individuals may apply at the border.

The first three steps involve pre-travel preparations: confirming eligibility to apply at a port of entry, arranging any required medical examinations in advance, and identifying the appropriate port of entry for biometric data collection. Upon arrival, applicants must inform the border officer of their intent to apply, present their documents, and undergo a review of their eligibility and admissibility.

Biometrics are collected at this stage if required. Applicants must pay a processing fee of $155, with additional fees for open work permits and biometrics.

If approved, the work permit is issued immediately, and applicants are advised to review the document for accuracy before leaving the port of entry.
