Canada Outlines Work Permit Application Requirements for Foreigners

Canada's Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship department has specified the documents required for foreign nationals seeking to apply for a work permit from outside the country. Applicants must submit a completed Application for Work Permit Made Outside of Canada form (IMM 1295), a photocopy of a valid passport or travel document, and a compliant photograph.

A personalized document checklist is provided for online applicants. Supporting documents may include proof of examination, a marriage certificate, certified translations of non-English or non-French documents, and various official forms.

Foreign nationals applying from a non-citizen country must also provide proof of their legal immigration status there. For employer-specific work permits, additional materials are required, including a letter from the current employer, references from previous employers, evidence of past work experience, and proof of meeting job requirements.

If no license or certification is needed, applicants should submit a blank sheet marked "Not applicable." Additional documents may vary based on the necessity of a Labour Market Impact Assessment.
