Canada and Nigeria Expand Air Transport Agreement

Canada and Nigeria have expanded their air transport agreement, enabling direct flights between the two countries for the first time. Announced by Canada’s Minister of Transport, Steven MacKinnon, the agreement allows multiple airlines from both nations to operate scheduled services, including up to 14 weekly passenger flights and 10 all-cargo flights.

The agreement also grants fifth freedom rights for all-cargo operations. MacKinnon stated that this expansion would create new opportunities for Canadian airlines and enhance travel options.

Canada’s Minister of International Trade, Maninder Sidhu, emphasized the importance of Nigeria's growing market for Canadian businesses. The Canadian government noted that Nigeria, with over 237 million people, is a significant market, particularly due to its young population.

As of March 31, 2026, more than 25,000 Nigerians held study permits for Canada, highlighting strong people-to-people ties. This expansion marks the first update to the Canada-Nigeria air transport arrangement since 2014.
