Canada Expands Cooperation Agenda with Nigeria

On Wednesday, Canada announced an expanded cooperation agenda with Nigeria, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations. David Sproul, Canada's Chargé d'Affaires, described Nigeria as a dynamic economy in Africa and a strategic partner for Canada.

The agenda aims to deepen cooperation in critical sectors, including agriculture, renewable energy, mining, and healthcare. Canada’s renewed engagement is part of its new Africa strategy, which seeks to build mutually beneficial partnerships based on trust and shared prosperity.

Sproul noted that the two countries have expanded collaboration across various sectors, including healthcare, education, governance, women's empowerment, trade, and security. He highlighted a recent high-level diplomatic engagement and Canada's development footprint in Nigeria, which includes improving healthcare access and supporting entrepreneurship.

The relationship extends beyond government interactions, with significant contributions from the Canadian-Nigerian diaspora. Sproul also mentioned the importance of cultural and educational exchanges, referencing Canada's co-hosting of the FIFA Men's World Cup alongside Mexico and the United States.
