Bishop Peter Chukwu of Abakaliki Laid to Rest

Peter Chukwu, the Catholic Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese, was laid to rest on April 10, 2026, following a brief illness. His sudden death prompted tributes from prominent figures, including former presidential candidate Peter Obi and governors Mba and Nwifuru.

The Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki announced his passing in a statement dated April 11, 2026, signed by Vicar General Donatus Oluwa Chukwu. The statement described his death as a return to the Father’s house and called for prayers for his soul.

Bishop Chukwu, born on November 5, 1965, in Ededeagu Umuezekohohu, Ebonyi State, undertook philosophical studies at the Wisdom Seminary in Owerri from 1985 to 1989, later completing his theological training at Bigard Memorial Major Seminary in Enugu from 1990 to 1993. He was ordained a priest on July 3, 1993, and appointed the third bishop of the diocese on July 6, 2021, with his consecration taking place on August 19, 2021.
