Obodo Appointed Apostolic Administrator of Abakaliki Diocese

Ernest Anaezichukwu Obodo has been appointed as the Apostolic Administrator of the Abakaliki Diocese after the death of Bishop Peter Nwori Chukwu. This appointment was announced through a decree issued by the Dicasteri for Evangelization, authorized by Pope Leo XIV, dated April 12, 2026.

The diocese became vacant upon the passing of Bishop Chukwu. Obodo, who currently serves as the Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Enugu, will manage the affairs of the Abakaliki Diocese during this period of vacancy.

The decree grants him special faculties to oversee the diocese in accordance with canon law until a substantive bishop is appointed. The Catholic Bishop Conference, represented by Secretary General Fr. Michael Banjo, described the decree as a significant moment marking the end of Bishop Chukwu's episcopal leadership in the diocese.

Bishop Obodo is expected to ensure the continuation of pastoral activities until the Holy See appoints a new bishop.
