Catholic Bishops Conference Calls for Action on Insecurity

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) issued a communiqué at the conclusion of their Second Plenary Meeting for 2026, held from September 10 to 18 at Our Lady and St. Kizito Pastoral Centre in Oke-Gada, Ede, Osun State. The communiqué, signed by President Archbishop Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso of Kaduna and Secretary Bishop Peter Olukayode Odetoyinbo of Abeokuta, urged governments at all levels to intensify efforts to combat insecurity, poverty, and poor infrastructure, which threaten the dignity and wellbeing of Nigerians.

The bishops condemned all forms of violence and abuse, calling for societal rejection of such acts. They expressed concerns regarding the ethical use of technology and Artificial Intelligence as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.

The bishops also highlighted the need for improved education funding and collaboration with the government to enhance quality education. They acknowledged Nigeria's resources but lamented ongoing issues such as insecurity, poverty, and bad governance, urging stronger security measures and accountability for criminal acts.
