Catholic Bishops Conference Urges Action on Insecurity

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) called on the government at all levels to address insecurity and alleviate the financial burden on poor Nigerians in a communique issued during the closing Mass of their 2026 2nd Plenary Meeting held at St. Benedict Cathedral, Osogbo, Osun State, on September 18, 2026. The communique, signed by CBCN President Most Rev. Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso and CBCN Secretary Most Rev. Peter Olukayode Odetoyinbo, expressed concern over worsening violence, including killings, kidnappings, and banditry, which are adversely affecting the economy and citizens' lives.

The bishops acknowledged government efforts to decentralize the police system but urged that such measures should serve the common good. They also highlighted the plight of internally displaced persons and called for respect and dignity for all individuals, including migrants and refugees.

The CBCN urged the government to strengthen security forces, improve intelligence, and hold wrongdoers accountable.
