Catholic Bishops Urge Action on Nigeria's Security Crisis

During the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria's (CBCN) first plenary meeting of 2026 held in Abuja, Archbishop Lucius Ugorji emphasized the urgent need for the federal government to address Nigeria's deteriorating security situation. He cited the alarming rise in kidnappings and mass killings across several states, particularly condemning the recent attacks in Woro Nuku community, Kwara State.

Ugorji criticized the government's reactive approach to security and called for investment in modern technology to enhance surveillance. He also acknowledged the potential benefits of the 2025 tax act, which took effect on January 1, 2026, but warned of possible hardships that could arise from it.

Dr. Mike Omeri, in his keynote address, stressed the importance of purpose-driven leadership that prioritizes the common good. Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama cautioned political and religious leaders against misusing their authority and expressed hope that the upcoming 2027 elections would reflect the true will of the Nigerian people.
